The 5 Worst Human Foods for Dogs
Dogs are man’s best friend and should be treated as such. Many store bought dry dog foods and Bully sticks treats are filled with fats and fillers that have been accused of causing obesity and diabetes in dogs, which in turn can lead to more severe health conditions, like arthritis and cardiovascular and kidney issues. Dog owners, in an attempt to properly care for our pets, must also look at the many human foods that potentially cause obesity, allergies and toxicity. Here are some dangerous foods for dogs:
1. Onions and garlic
This human food has a toxicity that causes severe anemia in dogs. Operations as serious as blood transfusions must be performed. One owner thought it nice to share mashed potatoes with his dog. When the dog showed listless activity, the vet discovered there had been a lot of onion and garlic powder in the potatoes. After a weeks stay convalescing in a hospital the dog was well again
2. Avocado
This food can possibly send your dog to the veterinarian if eaten because of a toxin called persin. Persin can cause diarrhea, heart congestion and vomiting which can be very hard on a dogs’ system. The pit of an avocado is loaded with persin and dogs love to chew on hard bone type objects. However, the injury and pain is certainly not worth the enjoyment gained by using it as a chew toy. Peaches and plums can have the same effect on the dog’s system because the seeds contain this toxin also. It is preferable that you do not give your dog these foods but if you do be sure to remove the seeds
3. Grapes and raisins
There is a mystery behind the harm that grapes and raisins can do. Simply put, these human foods are a no no for dogs to eat. They go straight to the kidney and cause kidney failure. Even a small amount can make a dog ill as it contains a toxin that is yet unknown. Dogs can die from just a small chunk of grape or raisin. There is no safe amount at all
4. Dairy products
Milk and dairy products can not be broken down in a dogs’ system because of the lack of enzymes in their body. This can cause food allergies too. However, if a small amount is eaten it should not worry the owner. But, if you pay attention to how human dairy foods can sometimes bother humans, think of what your dog will encounter
5. Caffeinated beverages and chocolate
Yes, they are yummy, but because caffeine makes them hyper and the other contains theobromine, dogs must not have them. These act as stimulants to the dog’s organs such as kidney, heart, guts and even the central nervous system. The owner should look for symptoms like vomiting, a rapid increase in heartbeat, hyper-activities, seizure and diarrhea. The owner may notice these symptomatic signs within four to twenty-four hours. Once diagnosed a veterinarian needs to know the quantity and type of chocolate to best treat your dog
